They were my mum’s favourite flower, so growing them now feels like a precious connection. Especially when I pick some and arrange them in her beautiful old blue and gold jug just as she used to do with the sweet peas my dad grew for her every year.
There are some really handy tips for growing success from founder of The Real Flower Company Rosebie Morton over on the blog (link in bio). Rosebie has a whole farm dedicated to sweet peas near Chichester so she knows a thing or two about the subject!
Main thing I’ve picked up from her is to allow lots of depth for root growth at this stage and to make my own supportive wigwams from twiggy branches when the plants are really starting to go for it and need a bit of direction. This photo is making me yearn slightly.

Thank you so much to Sarah @floribundaroseflorists Thank you so much to Sarah @floribundaroseflorists for a wonderful wreath making workshop yesterday. Such a special and creative space to spend time. I loved making my wreath - I went for a mixture of greenery arranged quite randomly with red waxed fresh apples, dried hydrangea, dried flowers, poppy and nigella seed heads and a winter white velvet bow.
There were so many wonderful ingredients to choose from we were really spoiled for choice.
Sarah’s new studio is such a beautiful, creative space. Think fragrant botanical candles flickering everywhere, mulled wine and apple juice simmering on the stove and containers full of fragrant festive greenery, waxed fruit, dried flowers and oranges, pine cones, lichen covered branches and even tiny gold wax-dipped fresh crab apples.
Thank you for being so patient with my lengthy ribbon choice deliberations Sarah - and for bagging up a second choice option (dusky pink) to take home! X. #wreathmaking #wreath #wreathsofinstagram #sustainablewreaths #wreathdecor #christmaswreath #velvetribbon #christmasdecor #festiveflowers

Win beautiful ethical linen clothing by Lemuel MC

I have loved Lemuel MC ethical linen clothing since I first discovered the brand a few years ago. Beautifully made to order in London using sustainable linen, the collections include all-season pieces that layer brilliantly. The designs are timeless, versatile and made to last… and last. Linen only gets more beautiful over time, so this well made hard-working clothing is the exact opposite of fast fashion.

As the season starts to move into Autumn, it feels like the perfect time to offer this rather wonderful competition prize. One lucky winner will be able to choose either this stunning 100% linen reversible hoodie scarf or a gift voucher for the same value (£120) to spend on any other piece from the Lemuel MC linen clothing and accessories collection. Scroll down for more details on the prize as well as how to enter… and good luck!

The reversible 100% linen hoodie scarf

linen hood hoodie in brown and pink ethically made in London by Lemuel MC and available to be won in our competition. Alternatively you can choose a voucher worth £120 towards any item from the Lemuel MC collection #linen #hood #competition #reversible

This beautifully made linen hoodie scarf puts me in mind of Meryl Streep in The French Lieutenant’s Woman.

Perfect for adding a touch of mystery and romance to your wardrobe, it’s also actually really practical and will keep your shoulders and head warm on chilly days. Wear it two ways – with either the grey or pink side facing out.

The soft pink lining is a thinner more open weave linen, creating a nice contrast with the thicker grey linen – both of which are ethically sourced.

I am sure this is a piece you’ll love to wear for years and wonder how you did without it before. Make like Meryl, hide away when you feel like it, or simply wrap up warm and toasty – it’s up to you.

Alternatively, the winner can opt for a £120 voucher (the same value as the hoodie scarf) to spend towards any purchase from the Lemuel MC collection. To give you a flavour of the seasonal loveliness you’ll find over there, here are one or two of my own favourites.

Rosalind Top

rosalind linen top with full sleeves and raw edges in dark midnight navy blue ethical linen

This is the Rosalind 83 top and it’s a bit of a show-stopper don’t you think? Made from 100% softened ethically sourced linen and available in 5 beautiful colours, it combines 80s inspired ruffles with modern raw edges. Wear on or off the shoulder and change the position of the sleeves to vary the look. Shown here with the Rosalind 83 skirt which has the same lovely raw edges.

Wrap dress

How gorgeous is this 100% linen wrap dress? It’s made to order in thicker linen perfect for layering on colder days. I love the pleats on the skirt and sleeves as well as this seasonal rust colour. Also available in navy.

I have recently become more aware of the world we live in and the planet we are leaving for future generations. I have spent part of this year trying to live a better life and reduce my waste, which has included clothes that have become almost disposable. I have come across this brand recently and fallen in love with the reasons behind the brand. My favourite is the rosalind navy top, which when I next need a new long term piece of clothing will be carefully selected. I love the Hoody and would be a great classic piece for the start of my daughters collection as I hope to build her a classic wardrobe rather than a disposable.

There’s something beautifully timeless and ethereal about the subtle muted earth tones of these linen garments. They evoke a feeling, an emotion, a precious simplicity. It’s knowing you are carrying on an age-old tradition and wearing effortlessly stylish natural cloth. It’s enjoying the comfort of the soft draping fabric against your skin. The loose, easy wear shaping and rich colour of the pinafore dress evoke all of these sensations. Teamed with the hooded scarf, or worn with a slouchy top, what better way to step into autumn?

I look better with fluid draping fabrics, so I usually do not wear linen successfully. The hood may be an exception! However, there were many pieces in the collection that I admired. In particular the Rosalind dress with its dramatic ruffle. The sustainability ethos is appreciated, and designs with a nod to the past mean that I will keep an eye on this company in case they do ever introduce other fabrics (or linen that has been softened out even more). If they come out with knitted linen, that would have even greater wearability. To be honest, the average person’s bone structure usually cannot wear these kind of designs and look polished. The average person actually looks very frumpy in linen. But because these designs are so distinctive, those who do have the body lines and face structure that can handle the drama of linen will appreciate this company’s offerings. It is wonderful to have clothing options that dare to be a little more different, and give us more “personality” than we normally see in chain store clothing lines. And because linen is so friendly on the environment, I would love to see more of it used in furnishings, bed linens, accessories and more. Kudos to this company and its founder/designer for daring to bring something fresh and responsible to the fashion world.

These linen clothes are blank slates for adding embellishments, pockets, patches, embroidery, stamping. Endless possibilities with linen! This is a dream package.

I like the idea of the pinafore dress as it should be a flexible piece of clothing, fine for smart casual and perfect for day-to-day-wear. Importantly for me, I have been looking for dresses that have pockets as I can’t go anywhere without my inhalers and it’s not always practical to carry a bag around with me. I also like that this piece would work for all seasons as could layer it with something under it or over it as the weather changes yet still good for spring/summer days. If I couldn’t find a dress I’d consider a skirt or trousers that had pockets.

The Lemuel MC collection is a wonderful inspiration for me. Simplicity, elegance and beautiful colors are what I really like, both in fashion and in the interior as well. I would be overjoyed to be the proud owner of something from your collection. I am from Serbia, a small country in Europe where the standard is very modest but I really like to follow nice things like your site. Thanks for the inspiration. Ohh that scarf, such a great peace of art!

I love the 100% Linen Reversible Loosie Jacket. Versatile and comfortable, it’s just what I need on my electric pedal assist adult tricycle trips. I took up tricycling recently, as I have been advised by my hospital consultant that I need to exercise and lose weight before I can have a hip replacement op. I suffer with painful osteoarthritis, and am unable to walk or cycle on two wheels. A lose, breathable fabric jacket would be perfect for me, as on my trips, I meet up for coffee etc with friends. The jacket reverses, and would give me a stylish ‘new look’ on arrival at our rendezvous!

Ooh if I could choose I’d pick the pinafore dress for long walks, with my boots and as many layers as I needed. I’ve taken to wearing a thick shawl for a coat on cold days, and the pinafore would look perfect with it. I’d wear the hooded scarf with my shawl too. Another warm layer to keep off the rain and wind. It’s going to be a cold winter this year.

It’s not too late to sow sweet peas - so easy to It’s not too late to sow sweet peas - so easy to grow and blissfully fragrant in the summer months.
I love this image of my friend Jo - we were trying I love this image of my friend Jo - we were trying out tiny living for a feature I was writing - this was taken on our way to indulge in a spot of forest bathing. To be totally honest, we were both a little sceptical beforehand. But we were only saying the other day how taken aback we both were by the amazing effect it had. I’m working on some new ideas around the subject - will keep you posted. X
I’m currently working on a redesign of the whole I’m currently working on a redesign of the whole site - which has meant lots of photo editing and reorganising so much content. What’s been lovely (despite the claw hand from so much keyboard work!) is revisiting work and becoming engrossed all over again. I thought I’d share a few of the things I’ve been (re) loving - with links in the bio to the old site for now, but not for long…! X
This image is from a feature about preserving garden roses. I’m going to give this a really good go this year, now I have a better idea what I’m doing. I know there’s nothing quite like a fragrant fresh rose in Summer but there’s a fragile beauty to dried and preserved flowers that I also love, don’t you?

One of the joyful things about this time of year f One of the joyful things about this time of year for me is making plans for next spring and summer in my flower cutting garden. After two years of growing cut flowers, I’m ready for some fresh ideas and to raise my game a little more. I would like to fill some gaps in shape and colour and to extend the flowering season in particular. I’d also like to start drying and preserving my flowers... so I am thrilled that Kirsten of @henthorn_farm_flowers has shared a beautiful glimpse into her seasonal and sustainable flowery world as well as lots of fantastic expert tips and ideas over on the blog - the link is in my bio. I hope you find some inspiration too. Kirsten lives in a very beautiful part of the world - the Ribble Valley in Lancashire. It’s an area very close to my heart as I grew up not far away. Loved spending a little virtual time there again, thanks to Kirsten - and I am yearning to go back in person one day soon and breathe it all in again.
To be honest, I’m still clinging on to the last To be honest, I’m still clinging on to the last moments of Summer. I do always eventually embrace Autumn but, this year in particular, I’m wanting to hold on for as long as possible to the quiet bliss of the last few months.
I do really worry about what lies ahead for us all, but spending time outdoors, connecting, really up close, to what’s going on in the garden definitely helps. I still have roses, sweet peas, snapdragons, zinnias, asters and LOTS of dahlias blooming so there are always jars and jugs of flowers on every available surface. Rose geranium leaves have been a revelation for adding a fragrant green frilliness - and now I’m full of love for abelia.
This beautiful photo is by @gandgorgeousflowers and captures the between-seasons beauty in the flower garden right now. I am inspired to create something similar as I have many of the same colours.
I do realise that it’s silly (and utterly pointless 😂) to resist Autumn as it’s actually one of the most beautiful times of year. As soon as the leaves really turn, and everywhere starts to smell like Autumn, I’m sure I’ll be fully on board.
With that in mind, I’ve shared lots of inspiring Autumn Flowers ideas over on the blog (link in my bio) from some of my favourite flower creatives including @gandgorgeousflowers @simplybyarrangement @therealflowerco @wildbunchflowers @floribundaroseflorists @thesussexflowerschool @electricdaisyflowerfarm

Hope you enjoy - and find a little bit of creative inspiration too. X
