17 free amigurumi crochet patterns
4 key takeaways
1 Amigurumi is a Japanese craft term combining “ami” (crocheted or knitted) and “nuigurumi” (small stuffed doll) to describe small yarn creatures that make endearing handmade gifts.
2 Free amigurumi patterns range from beginner-friendly designs requiring only basic stitches like magic circle, chain, and single crochet to intermediate and advanced patterns featuring fantasy creatures and detailed dolls.
3 Most amigurumi projects use worsted weight or DK yarn with hook sizes between 3.5mm and 4mm, though these projects provide an excellent opportunity to use up scrap yarn from other crafting projects.
4 Patterns typically require safety eyes, toy stuffing, and a yarn needle for assembly, with finished sizes ranging from tiny 9cm creations to larger 9-inch doorstop designs.
If you’re looking for a crochet project, how about creating amigurumi toys? Or just ONE toy if you’re not sure your skill level is quite up to creating more just yet?
If the idea appeals, check out my favourite free pattern ideas (17 of them – as well as some beautiful patterns to buy). There are also yarn recommendations (though crochet toys can be a great way to use up scrap yarn!). Hope you enjoy making one or two of the amigurumi projects I’ve picked out. There are beginner amigurumi patterns suitable for beginner crocheters as well as more challenging fantasy creatures to make.

Kira the kangaroo

Such a beautiful pattern and there’s an adorable story to go with it, all about Kira:
Kira can be seen from afar by her long scarlet coloured scarf – so the koalas sometimes call her the “Red Kira”. In her spacious pouch she keeps everyday things and her impressive collection of antique cushion springs – and of course her baby kangaroo feels most at home here. After a furious victory in the shadow boxing championship, the two prepare themselves for the world championship in long-jump.

Amigurumi Skill Progression Path: From Single Stitch to Character Building
Most crochet pattern roundups simply list projects by difficulty, but there’s a strategic skill-building sequence hidden within amigurumi that transforms beginners into advanced makers faster than traditional learning methods.
The Amigurumi Skill Ladder:
Foundation Level (Weeks 1-2): Simple geometric shapes
Start with the Squishy Bumblebee or Teeny Tiny Dachshund—these patterns teach you to crochet in spirals and master the invisible decrease, which creates seamless shaping that’s essential for professional-looking amigurumi.
Character Development Level (Weeks 3-4): Adding personality through proportions
Progress to Tip the Border Collie or the Crochet Bunny, which introduce limb attachment and colour changes mid-project. These patterns teach how different body-to-head ratios create distinct character personalities.
Wardrobe & Details Level (Weeks 5-6): Miniature textile work
Tackle the Pig in Dress or Chinese New Year Doll to learn how fabric elements and tiny accessories transform simple amigurumi into heirloom-quality pieces. This is where embroidery stitches for facial features become crucial.
Master Level (Weeks 7+): Complex assembly and posing
The Primrose Doll and Kira the Kangaroo require wire armature insertion for poseable limbs and multi-piece construction that teaches advanced assembly techniques professional toy makers use.
The Secret Advantage: Unlike flat crochet projects where mistakes are visible, amigurumi’s 3D nature means your early wonky stitches get hidden inside or smoothed out by stuffing—making it paradoxically more forgiving for nervous beginners whilst simultaneously teaching advanced shaping techniques.
5 key things to remember
#1 Amigurumi uses a Japanese craft technique combining crocheted or knitted work with stuffed doll construction to create small yarn creatures that serve as endearing handmade gifts suitable for all ages.
#2 Pattern difficulty ranges from beginner to advanced based on stitch complexity with beginner patterns requiring only magic circle, chain, and single crochet whilst advanced designs incorporate fabric integration, embroidery, and poseable wire armatures.
#3 Most amigurumi projects work best with worsted weight or DK yarn and 3.5-4mm hooks though these projects provide an excellent way to use scrap yarn from previous crafting endeavours.
#4 Stephanie Lau’s patterns are available both free on her AllAboutAmi website and as ad-free printable PDFs on Etsy giving crafters flexibility in how they access her highly detailed doll and creature designs.
#5 Essential supplies include safety eyes, toy stuffing, and yarn needles for assembly with finished projects ranging from 9cm miniatures to 9-inch functional items like doorstops depending on yarn weight and hook size chosen.
