Mother’s Day can be a bittersweet time for those of us who no longer have our mums to buy for. I know all too well those double-edged emotions. She popped into my mind because of those flower-filled soft focus Le Jardin de Max Factor perfume adverts from the 80s where she is harvesting kilos of roses in full length off-the-shoulder chiffon evening gown).
Choose something with love
My mum always wore Dior perfume, and I am sure never actually used any of the Blue Fern Fly Killer toiletries I presented her with over the years. But I know that her joy at receiving these gifts from me was real. She knew I’d chosen something with love, even if it would, in all probability, leave you with a nasty dose of contact dermatitis if you were foolhardy enough to actually use the stuff. I realise I’ve gone off on a bit of a tangent, but my point is that still having a mum to make a fuss of on Mother’s Day is beyond precious.
I will still buy a lovely bunch of flowers for my mum on Mother’s Day, arrange them in her favourite antique jug and think of her every time I look at them.
