I’ve been an admirer of Tatiana’s painterly way with stitch and thread, particularly her flower designs, so I’m excited to share this super simple but really decorative embroidery stitch with you.
Fly stitch step by step tutorial by Tatiana Popova
This Poppy design is probably my favourite from Tatiana’s new book – and the fly stitch leaf is the central one towards the bottom. It’s a simple stitch to master but so useful. It’s perfect for creating poppy leaves here, but it’s also making me think of Christmas trees and festive greenery. Add a few french knots in bright colours and you’ve made baubles. That’s the joy of learning a new craft technique – it opens up more creative ideas and possibilities.

Step 1

Work a straight stitch, which will be the tip of your leaf. Add a loop of fly stitch around it.
Step 2

Come up inside the loop
Step 3

Work a very small tying stitch to hold the loop in place. Proceed in the same way, repeatedly working fly stitches close to each other and following the leaf shape.
Step 4

Optional: make the very last tying stitch longer to resemble the stalk of the leaf
Step 5

For a dentate leaf margin, lengthen some of the fly stitches
