I know just how much love there is out there for Claire Garland’s adorable knitted creations, so I’m sure you’ll take this little tawny owl to heart too. The pattern is available to buy on Etsy as a downloadable PDF with lots of helpful how to photos and all the info you need to get knitting! I’ve shared Claire’s super-helpful video tutorial too – perfect if you get stuck or would just like a little help.

What you’ll need:

To make the owl using the same yarns as Claire:

1x25g ball of Drops Brushed Alpaca Silk shade 01 Off White

25g ball of Rowan Alpaca Merino DK shade 101 Saxon

1x25g ball Drops Brushed Alpaca Silk shade 04 Light Beige

25g ball Drops Kid-silk shade 15 Dark Brown

1x25g ball Drops Alpaca shade 9025 Hazelnut

25g ball Drops kid-silk shade 30 Curry

Needles: Pair 4mm/US 6 knitting needles

Extras:

toy filling or scraps of fabric or yarn for stuffing

stitch markers

length of yellow cotton or wool yarn for beak

18mm brown toy safety eyes (3in)

Bird wire legs (Claire used these white ‘large’ legs from TheMakerss.co.uk)

Glue for sticking yarn to wire.

Claire’s notes:

This owl is knitted all in one, joining and sewing up parts as you go – but don’t let this daunt you – check out my video tutorial that goes with it (above) – so everything will be as clear as a bell!

You’ll have noticed the extensive yarn choice – these were the yarns I used but you can substitute with other similar type yarns – I tend to use mohair or lace weight yarns together with 4-ply or DK yarns for my patterns but for this project if you find a beautiful tweedy yarn then that would be just perfect – just make sure you maybe alter your needle size to suit (I suggested a 4mm/ size 6 for my choices which gives you a 8 inch owl approx.)

The eyes – I bought mine from Ebay but there are loads on Etsy and suncatchercrafteyes to choose from.
