I do really love a traditional Welsh blanket. They are built to last… and last… and the timeless patterns feel fresh and contemporary. One of my very favourite things is a blue and white one I bought over a decade or so ago on a trip to Snowdonia. It was for my son’s bedroom – he was then about 7 – and it spent the first ten years over the foot of his bed.
The tin lighthouses and seaside decorations were gradually replaced as my son grew up, along with the Welsh blanket. Now his room is full of tech and minimal Japanese prints… and the blanket has become my garden blanket instead. I keep it to hand on chilly days so I can still enjoy settling back outside. Because it’s made from double cloth, it’s one of the best things EVER for keeping the cold and wind out. It’s still every bit as beautiful as the day I bought it and there’s a lingering slight sheepiness to it that I love because it somehow connects me back to the Welsh mountains.
Tirglas blankets
I was just browsing the Tirglas website (discover more about Tirglas in my directory) and came across this beauty. The colours feel perfect for this time of year – to my mind, it’s the ideal ‘Christmas blanket’.

I thought I’d share it with you, too, in case you’re in need of some cheery cosiness. A 100% British wool blanket, woven in Wales with a Red Dragon red weft and a cream and Preseli green warp, the pattern is iconic: it’s the historic Caernarfon portcullis design. The colours of Wales and also of Christmas.
Woven as a double cloth, these blankets are fully reversible and, as I’ve already mentioned, THE BEST at keeping you warm.
You can buy the blanket here. If you would like the blanket in time for this Christmas, you’ll have to act fast! The last Royal Mail posting dates for express24 is Sunday (21st).
