In The Making Aprons – handmade workwear aprons for artists & makers.
Each apron in ‘In The Making’ apron is designed and made by Lisa Bennet, who works from her home studio, in hilly-leafy South-East London…
Meet Lisa, founder of In the Making aprons
‘My studio is a high ceilinged, sunny room with my sewing machine in the bay window, two big trestle tables for cutting out fabric and drafting patterns, and lots of design drawings stuck on the walls.
In The Making Aprons range has gradually evolved and specialised, working on bespoke orders for artists and artisan businesses – learning about their skills and practice is the most fascinating part of my work.My aprons are worn by printmakers, potters, ceramicists, painters, glassmakers, woodworkers, jewellery makers, weavers, art restorers, antiquarian booksellers… and quite often worn for baking, housework and gardening too! Aprons very much embody the makers work ethic – put on an apron and you feel ready for work and ‘in the zone’….but equally, wearing your favourite comfy apron makes chores a little more bearable!
I am devoted to contemporary crafts, visual arts and the culture of ‘counter-industrial handmade’, which In The Making – Aprons embraces; ethical slow clothing, meticulous attention to detail and finish, well chosen fabrics, made to last for years to come.
Since leaving art college, I’ve had a meandering career in music, marketing, and design – but all the while continued to paint and make… always with a project on the go! My own favourite apron is my tie-dye crossback No4, it’s so comfy and easy to wear, and splodges of paint just add extra character! Putting on an apron gives me a tingle of anticipation as I get ready to work!
