I hope I help you to find the perfect hand-knit Christmas stocking to make – so why not get the knitting needles out and start crafting a stocking or two, or three or more..? It’s easier than you might think – I know from personal experience that you can hide a multitude on the wrong side or simply start again if it goes too wrong! – and definitely great fun. Hang up the stockings and see what Father Christmas – or Santa Claus – decides to put in there on Christmas Eve… Happy knitting!
10 best Free Christmas stocking patterns
Love Crafts is a great place to find free knitting patterns – and a useful starting point for finding ideas.
1 This is a cute self-striping free knitting pattern

You will need: 9.00mm (US 13) & 10.00mm (US 15) Single Point Needles, Stitch holder, scissors, large eyed needle. Made from super chunky self-striping Paintbox yarn it knits up super fast – so you could start it on Christmas Eve if you had to! Suitable for beginners upwards.
2 Simple stocking stitch pattern

This simple stockinette stitch (or stocking stitch) stocking pattern is great https://www.lovecrafts.com/en-gb/p/essential-christmas-knits-ebook-free-knitting-pattern-for-christmas-by-paintbox-yarns
I love the idea of knitting it in solid color – like this red yarn example and go for a bulky weight yarn or worsted weight yarn depending on the look you’re going for. I personally like the bulky yarn look here. Suitable for intermediate knitters upwards.
3 Swedish design stocking

I also love this Swedish handmade Christmas stockings knitting pattern by Millamia Needle size required: 3.00mm (US 2.5) & 3.25mm (US 3) Single Point Needles. Techniques used: Cables, Seamed, Stranded, Stripes, Worked Flat. There are four different designs to choose from within the pattern – they look wonderful hung together as a set of 4. Yarn weight is Sport weight 100% merino wool. You’ll also need a crochet hook to make the hanging loop for the top of the stocking. I like that the way that the body of the stocking is really different for each of these, but by using a palette of red and white (always perfect for the holiday season!) the designs work really well together.
4 Cabled Stocking

I like the understated simplicity of this pattern in one main colour worsted-weight yarn with texture added by cabling. As family heirlooms go, this one’s a potential winner – assuming you’re up to the cabling, which I’m not sure I am. I might have to stick to basic knitting stitches for my own stocking making – but I know that many of you are more than able to tackle something like this..x. The finished stockings look fab is this selection of colours.
5 White Christmas stocking

This beautiful Noel Blanc stocking pattern by Atelier des Glenettes would look super stylish hanging near the Christmas tree. It’s worked from toe to ankle on US 8 – 5 mm needles. The embroidered design is added to the finished right side with a tapestry needle and the pattern includes a snowflake and tree design. Feel free to add your own patterns – that’s where the fun lies. It’s easy knit stocking is simple enough for a new knitter or beginner knitters to take on and is a simple knit pattern sure to bring Christmas spirit.
6 Simple contemporary design

I really like the simple contemporary style of this pattern by Purl Soho. It’s made in Jumbo weight wool with US 17 – 12.0 mm needles. You’ll also need US 17 (12 mm), 16-inch circular needles

A jumbo stitch marker or scrap yarn
The perfect stocking for a style conscious family member. Use their favourite shades as the accent color for the top border and toe/heel details. Color changes like this make these designs unique to you.
7 Candy Cane stocking

8 Fair isle stocking
Fair isle knitting always feels festive to me. So how about his cute stocking.
It’s an easy way in to fair isle knitting and you can adapt to make larger stockings if you prefer. You can also change out the dpn (double pointed needles) for a circular needle if you prefer. The yarn weight is DK but you can use chunkier – or finer – along with smaller or larger needles depending on the size you want to end up with. Fingering weight yarn might work well if you want to go more down the string of little stockings as a garland decoration route. This is a great stash busting project (assuming you have red, white and green in there!. You only need a small amount of wool to make a pair of socks. The charts showing the different stitch patterns are straight forward to follow.
