Discover Fern Taylor Pottery – a London-based ceramicist who makes hand-built studio pottery with a distinctive use of Nerikomi in its design – a traditional Japanese technique of stacking, folding and slicing different colour clays to create patterns directly into the body of pieces.
She works full-time from her studio in Deptford, South London
The Pivot to Hand-Building: While Fern originally took wheel-throwing classes, she pivoted entirely to hand-building during the pandemic lockdown when studio wheels became inaccessible. She has exclusively used hand-building techniques ever since.
Unlike many Nerikomi practitioners who prefer porcelain, Fern mainly works with stoneware because she favours its natural warmth and the way it holds pigment. She finishes her work with clear, transparent gloss glazes. This leaves the natural variations, textures, and structural boundaries of the clay fully visible rather than hidden.
