Every sewing project has its own story…..what will yours be? 

I have put sewing kits together for people who want an easy solution to making the characters and would like everything provided for them. The kits include everything needed to make each of the characters.  They have been carefully sourced and every item is of the highest quality. Each kit is beautifully presented, wrapped in tissue paper and hopefully, the love that has been put into them, can be felt.

Having sewn for a very long time, I know how much pleasure it has given me. When I was very young, I started off making toys from sewing kits very similar to these. I know that people lead such busy lives that providing people with a kit with everything provided, makes it much easier to start sewing straight away.

Theodore Bear is the first of the characters that I designed for Theodore Bear and Friends and I wanted him to be the central character. When I designed him I knew that I wanted a traditional bear with movable arms and legs and he was to have a kind character. I took a long time making changes to the pattern to get it just right and searching for the perfect fabric to give him the old fashioned, vintage look that I was searching for. I designed the coat to keep him cosy and I was careful to choose colours that continued the earthy, traditional feel.

My Etsy shop, A Sewing Life is where you will find a beautiful range of memory bear sewing patterns and kits to make Theodore Bear and Friends, a collection of lovely heirloom memory bears that you will treasure and fall in love with.

My daughter Grace, who is a talented writer studying English at Oxford University, wrote stories about each of the characters to bring them to life. We discussed where they would live and what they would be like and she put all of that into a lovely short story that we call ‘All About Theodore Bear’.  All of the other characters also have their own story. The stories will be published into a series of books so that when people make any of the characters, they can bring the character in the book to life.  Because I know that people who sew love to make handmade gifts, I love the idea of them making one of Theodore Bear and Friends and being able to give a book as well with a story about the character they have made.

A little snippet about Theodore Bear…..

Theodore Bear is a peaceful soul who will hum as he cracks open another dusty old book before bed every evening, at precisely nine o’clock. He will have spent the day wearing a mellow smile which he shares with everyone he passes. It has been a while since Theodore frowned, in fact.

When not guzzling another steaming pot of freshly brewed tea, you can find this bear scribbling his thoughts onto any surface he can get his paws on – notepads, the backs of receipts, or some kitchen roll if he’s in a spot of a rush.
