Rehana Begum
Owner, Creative Director and Sewing Tutor
My design, sewing, making story started quite early on. It was from my mother that my interests in sewing, crafts and embroidery were sparked. I watched her as a child on her industrial machine, sewing up colourful – somewhat flamboyant – matching outfits for my sisters and I.
My mother’s creativity rubbed off on me and by the age of 13 I already knew I wanted to merge my love of drawing, painting, making and sewing to become a fashion designer. I went onto to earn a BA degree in Fashion Design at Central Saint Martins. It was during a spell at Savile Row my interest and skills in tailoring and pattern cutting really developed.
As a Designer, I worked for several high-end London based fashion companies including All Saints, Matthew Williamson, Preen, Margaret Howell and Ozwald Boateng.
I came into teaching when I was offered an opportunity to lead an empowerment project teaching dressmaking to local women in West Africa. I loved it so much that when I returned to London in 2016 I decided to continue teaching dressmaking at various sewing studios including Sew it with Love.
Over time the teaching became a more prominent part of my life as I started to teach more and more. So when Elena (Founder of Sew it with Love) decided to move onto newer paths and offered me the opportunity to lead the business, it seemed like a natural progression.
Like Elena, I believe in education, learning and especially in today’s world, I believe understanding and knowing the value of material, clothing and production is more important than ever. Having the skills to upcycle, alter, renew and appreciate making can only be of benefit.
Passing on my sewing and dressmaking skills to others has proven to be a wonderful, exciting and very rewarding journey and I look forward to continuing to share it with all of our wonderful current and future clients.
