Maria Sigma is an award-winning weaver specialising in ‘zero waste’ ethical hand-woven textiles based in London.

A bit about me

By using exceptional natural materials my work celebrates a timeless high aesthetic via ‘zero waste’ design and a slow-making ethic. I combine a contemporary approach of traditional weaving techniques and a focus on raw natural materials and texture.

Inspired by nature and my Greek heritage, I make vibrant, minimal, contemporary textile artworks. I create high-quality hand-woven textiles designed to become timeless heirlooms.

Meet Maria Sigma

My approach to design is based on the idea of creating beautiful textiles through ‘zero waste’ design and craftsmanship. High-quality and sustainable natural fibres are key to the philosophy of my work, in which the aspiration for textile longevity through simplicity and sensibility is essential. Weaving is my way of putting the everyday chaos in order and make something honest and beautiful out of it.

After completing my studies in Textile Conservation in Greece I went on to complete a degree in Textile Design at Chelsea College of Art and Design in London. In 2015 & 2016 I was the recipient of Cockpit Arts /  ‘Clothworkers’ Award with which I started my own business practice.

Weaving at home

‘Weaving At Home’ is a new series of step-by-step video-tutorials, which will teach you how to hand-weave on a frame loom using everyday materials and tools easy to find at home.

The aim of the video-tutorials is to show you all the basics of how to weave on a frame loom (with a rotate rigid heddle bar) or on a DIY one, with tools and materials that you can easily find at home, by re-purposing objects and upcycling your old clothes and household textiles.

You will learn foundational weaving skills, such as warping, loom set up, colour blending and structure.  Basic weaving techniques and patterns  are also covered to help you develop your own distinctive voice as a weaver.

You can make a small wall hanging, pieces for a patchwork, a clutch bag or an abstract artwork, and plenty more. Let your imagination run wild!
