Alex Yule Jewellery

Alex Yule Jewellery is beautiful silver and gold handmade jewellery. Designs include Alex’s popular mussel, urchin and snowdrop designs.

Drawing inspiration from a love of natural forms, Alex’s designs reflect her love of the coast.

Alex creates her Urchin and Mussel collections from tiny silver casts taken from real sea urchins and mussel shells. She turns the casts into delicate silver jewellery using traditional techniques. To create beautiful effects, Alex applies surface finishes such as enamel oxidisation and gold vermeil (plating). The tiny urchins in her work measure just 10mm in diameter the small mussel shells approx. 10mm in length. Pieces from these collections range from £65- £195.

Alex Yule Jewellery Urchin collection

My collection of sea urchins was originally gathered as a keepsake from a childhood family holiday. It sat on a mantel piece for nearly 20 years, lined up like Russian dolls. It was the smallest of these that went on to inspire my delicate sterling silver Urchin Collection.

Everyone seems to love the sea urchins’ aesthetically pleasing natural form. By creating a mould of the original shell and casting it in solid silver, I can capture its memory forever. I turn each of these tiny silver forms into a beautiful yet durable piece of jewellery. I use different surface finishes such as pale turquoise enamel, oxidized silver and 18ct rose gold plating. Mussel collection

The Mussel Collection is inspired by some miniature mussel shells I found whilst exploring a rocky Cornish beach.

The mussel’s external shell has two hinged halves or valves. I take these tiny natural forms and replicate them by creating a mould of each half. I then pour in hot silver to form solid shell-shaped casts. Then I file and prepare these before soldering them together. This feels like reawakening the delicate combined forms in sterling silver. Finishing is with an oxidized, polished outer surface. This really brings out the textured detail. The protected inner is realised in either 18ct gold plating or pale turquoise enamel.
