Lane plastic free two tone lampshades
Lane is creatively directed by designers Joff and Ollie. Their passion for British design, culture and history has attracted some of the UK’s most renowned brands, artists and designers to work with them. After finishing a fine art degree Joff Casciani met his business partner Ollie and Lane was created. Lane’s designs are clean, modern and graphic, often referencing iconic 20th century design and architecture.

A modern day David and Goliath
What’s Normal?
Once a upon a time, there were high streets with green grocers, butchers, bakers and even some candlestick makers – people who made things in their community – craftspeople who cared about what they made and knew their customers. These shops were hubs of the community.
Now there are high streets filled with chains, supermarkets and shopping centres usually anonymous and definitely boring.
Hand crafted has been swapped for mass produced, local materials for cheap plastics, interesting ideas for design with no depth.
Well made things that were handed down have been replaced with disposable fashions and cheap junk for the home that solved problems you didn’t even know you had.
The fight is on.
At Lane, we make a range of things for the home – all handmade at our workshop or by a community of UK makers and artists who care about what they do, how they do it and what it means.
We use local materials that are natural, innovative, ethical, long lasting and traceable. We’re not out to exploit people on the other side of the world.
This was once normal, now its the exception, we want it to be normal again. We call this ‘Future Folk’.
We may be small, possibly insignificant, and the odds are completely against us, but we’re staking everything on it. They are Goliath, we are David.
Why do you do what you do?
I love great design and have a passion for good quality, well made things. Im also passionate about making things in the UK as I believe it’s more sustainable and better for our community and economy.
Favourite piece (and why)?
The Swimming print as I feel it’s the first print that captures the essence of our new products: fabric and cushions launching in 2013.
What inspires you?
Inspiration comes from everywhere. Im currently reading the history of Knoll Textiles and spending time identifying modernist property in the UK.
What’s special about your designs?
Design wise, there’s nothing quite like our designs out there. In terms of quality, our screen printer is the best I have ever seen. He’s got 30 years experience and is an exceptional old school craftsman.
We work with internationally recognised companies including Margaret Howell, David Mellor, Paul Smith, Heal’s and Little Greene as well as leading cultural organisations; The National Trust, Arts Council England, Zabludowicz Collection, Nottingham Contemporary and Wellcome Collection.
Their work has been acknowledged by the international design press with projects featured in Wallpaper, Monocle, The Guardian and Elle Decoration among others.
