Wayne Hemingway at The Sorting Office 3rd Birthday

We first came across The Sorting Office when we met jewellery maker Joanne Tinley and illustrator Denise Hughes. Both have creative studio space at The Sorting Office, a local council-supported initiative in Eastleigh, Hampshire. It’s aim is simple – to provide affordable co-working space for creatives.

Why Wayne Hemingway has supported The Sorting Office

Internationally acclaimed designer, Wayne Hemingway, has offered background support to the project from its very beginning. He was also there to officially open the studios three years ago. Here’s a short interview with him explaining why he wanted to get involved.

The Sorting Office celebrated its  3rd birthday with 50 VIP guests on May 13th, and Wayne was once again in attendance to offer his support.

“When this was first thought of nearly four years ago it was crazily brave really, and the reason why I liked the idea was because it was brave,’ he says.

“It’s a testament to all the people who work and operate here that it’s a success, and also to everybody involved in running it, for the council to support this, it’s just total bravery.

“In the last three years it’s been empirically proven, the value of these kind of people to the economy.”

Home to 16 designer makers

The Sorting Office is home to 16 designer-makers. It is run in partnership between Eastleigh Borough Council and arts’ charity ‘a space’. We think it’s great what Eastleigh Borough Council have achieved and we call on other local councils to follow their lead. We couldn’t agree with Wayne more when he says that following the creative path leads to a better life. Maybe not a more lucrative one, but certainly a better one.
