FBWL director, Laura, tells the story:
It all began back some years ago now when I launched a quirky online shop called Lasso the Moon. My youngest son was only very small at the time, so I wanted something that could work around my family life whilst allowing me to pursue my passion for finding and promoting exciting makers and artisans.
My previous working life had been as a journalist and magazine editor in the national women’s magazine press. I had over 15 years experience working on titles including Woman & Home, Woman’s Journal, Woman’s Realm and The M&S Magazine. In that time I had collaborated with many talented people including top photographers, marketeers and top press contacts. I decided to put this experience to good use. It was so exciting to finally get to use it all for my own passion-based project.
The idea was to beautifully showcase handmade loveliness sourced from British designer makers. The Lasso the Moon site launched with 33 great makers at The Country Living Magazine Christmas Fair in London and was selected as Show Highlight by the Editor and was subsequently featured on the BBC London news.
Quite quickly we outgrew the first site. Things were already moving on, and I realised we needed an effective blog, effective social media presence and ideally a directory that could enable us to promote more makers and producers than our sweet little shop could.
A new partnership
That’s when I came across the very first From Britain with Love site that had just launched. It had exactly the content I’d decided I wanted for Lasso the Moon. Having initially gone into a small decline thinking ‘I was going to do that!’. I decided to be proactive and make contact with Nicky Sherwood who had launched the site. Nicky emailed me straight back, even though she had only given birth a couple of weeks earlier.
We decided to meet for a coffee to see how we got on and where it took us. Coffee turned into lunch and then afternoon tea. It was like we’d always known each other. We decided to to join the two companies together under the name From Britain with Love and formed a partnership to share the best of both previous sites.
We were riding high when we were hit with the unexpected blow a couple of years ago that Nicky had breast cancer and would need urgent treatment. It was a tough time to say the least. After her treatment had finished, Nicky decided to take time to be with her family and also decided to give me her share of the business.
I am so happy to be able to tell you that Nicky is healthy, happy and doing really well.
Which brings us to where we are now. I decided it was time to rebrand, refresh and reboot when I took over the site. Which is what we’ve just done. An awful lot of hard work and commitment has gone into the redesign and I am proud of what we’ve achieved. I am also beyond excited to get to work promoting and supporting the great UK businesses we get to work with.
