  • The Beach Shack Steephill Cove was established as a tea room early in the last century.

This superlative beach cafe enjoys stunning sea views from its picturesque terrace. Since 2010 it has been run and managed by Andy and his wife Choo. The cafe serves a wide selection of freshly prepared sandwiches and salads,
together also with pints of juicy prawns and homemade cakes. Speciality dishes include homemade crab tart or crab soup flavoured with Thai spices. Trays are also available for the beach together with a comprehensive selection of
hot and cold drinks and New Forest ice creams.

The Beach Shack Steephill Cove is now licensed to sell beer and wine from 11.00am. This recently refurbished must -visit venue situated in one of the Island’s prettiest coves offers a family- friendly experience and as the beach is not accessible by car it is a perfect spot for kids to play whilst parents can relax.
Open 7 days a week 10-4 fully licensed.

Access for visitors is by walking down Love Lane which is adjacent to the cricket ground (before the turning for The Botanical Gardens} and then down either one of two narrow steep winding paths, one with steps one without. This way is suitable for the disabled with assistance because of the steep slope and hold on to children – although the fences are ok underfoot conditions due to land movement are sometimes slightly hazardous. Pushchair access is possible. Car parking is possible on the main A3055 road from Ventnor to St. Lawrence.

    Directions walking from Ventnor

Another very popular route is from Ventnor walking across the cliff footpath at the end of the top car park behind The Spyglass Inn {parking your car here if you haven’t parked elsewhere} and then across the sea fortifications path to Steephill Cove, about 0.5 mile. Note: Last year a small part of the cliff top path has been closed in between Ventnor and Steephill and many steep steps have been installed instead further inland, therefore you will need some help if you happen to have a pushchair!

    Directions from Botanical Gardens

Lastly it is possible to walk out the back of Ventnor Botanical gardens in a Easterly direction on the coastal narrow footpath till you pass the back of the new cricket pitch a quick turn right and you are at the end of Love Lane and the start of the steep winding paths that lead into Steephill Cove. There is a choice of paths to get down, long steps or steep slope as described in the route above.
