As lovers of midcentury and scandi-inspired design, as well as passionate supporters of independent makers, it’s no surprise really that we fell in love with Seven Gauge Studios knitted accessories, blankets and cushions (listed in our directory here).
Joy Bates is the designer/founder of Seven Gauge Studios, and before setting up her own knitwear and knitted homeware accessories business, she had previously designed knitted fabric for international design houses including Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein and Nicole Farhi.
We love Joy’s joyful, and confident, use of colour as well as her graphic, contemporary designs inspired by midcentury and nordic aesthetics.
‘Using traditional techniques to achieve a contemporary product, I am committed to keeping manufacture within the UK ,’ says Joy. ‘All products are designed and made by myself at my studio in Nottingham, together with the help of a small family run factory in the Midlands. My love of pattern and colour always runs through my collections each year and draws inspiration from various sources including vintage fabrics, my ever-growing collection of old knitting patterns and midcentury design.’
