Joanne Tinley Jewellery
After ten years as a secondary school teacher I turned my passion for jewellery making into a business I could fit around my young family. Another decade on and I am even more passionate about what I do, excited by every new design and commission and so lucky to love my work! I have also combined my two careers and teach jewellery design, passing on the traditional skills that I use, some of which are thousands of years old.
Where and how are your products made?My studio is one of sixteen in the old Sorting Office studios in Eastleigh, Hampshire. It is a wonderfully creative and colourful place to work! All of my jewellery is made using traditional silversmithing techniques, and my favourite tools are my hammers and my jeweller's saw. My favourite technique is Keum Boo, an ancient Korean technique that fuses thick 24k gold foil to fine silver.
Why do you do what you do?I can't not create! Each piece of jewellery that I design gives me more ideas, even if not all of them make it past the experimental stage. I've been known to get rather cranky if I'm away from the studio for too long. Even when we're going on holiday I have to create and my knitting, notebook and pencils are the first things that I pack.
Favourite piece (and why)?I have two! Firstly my Cup of Gold Cluster earrings as I love the way that they gently swing and tinkle as I move. I also love my Cup of Gold studs as I can wear them just as easily with a pair of jeans as I can on a (rare!) night out.
What inspires you?Everything! The pattern on a piece of fabric can inspire a new pendant, or the texture on a tree can make me get my hammers out and try to recreate it on silver.
What’s special about your designs? The combination of silver and gold is beautiful. I have to get the two precious metals to exactly the right temperature and burnish them together for the fusing to take place, but it is worth it!
I always try to create jewellery that can be worn on any occasion, from the school gate and office to a wedding. The clean, smooth lines that I use in my designs help them to be timeless and look just as beautiful years after the first time that you put them on.
