Great Escapes

Escape to... the South Hams

This month our Great Escape is brought to you by Hannah Wiltshire, founder of This Is Your Kingdom - an insider's guide to lovely local things to see and do in the UK. Having grown up in Devon, Hannah now lives in London but longs to return some day soon. Here Hannah shares her tips on the best places to shop, eat, stay and visit in the South Hams.

Where is it?

The glorious South Hams is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the south Devon coast, which is noted for its local food, culture and landscape.

Why should I go there?

For me, the South Hams really captures the essence of Devon. Rolling green hills lead into white sandy shores and blue blue sea stretches far out to the horizon. There's lots to explore by foot, car, boat or bicycle - hidden coves and beaches, miles of National Trust coast path, historic houses, independent shops and markets overflowing with the very best local produce. Enjoy long lunches in cosy pubs and afternoons feating on delicious home-baked cream teas with lashings of Devon clotted cream and homemade jam.

Can I stay somewhere with a bit of character?

To experience quintessential Devon a stay at South Allington House in Chivelstone is an absolute must. Snuggled in a cosy nook on the Southernmost tip of Devon, this lovely family run hotel is reminiscent of times gone by. Blessed with a certain ‘Darling Buds of May’ charm, it is special in so many ways... from the award-winning cream teas served on the lawn to the friendly manner of owners Barbara and Edward (a true local who grew up on the adjacent farm). With five bedrooms, three self-catering cottages and acres of space for campers, there's something to suit everyone.

Will I find interesting local products to buy?

Take the boat from East Portlemouth across to Salcombe and spend the morning exploring this very pretty beach-side town. Or take a trip to Kingsbridge, a thriving market town full of unique places to potter... head to the Red Earth Deli and sample their secret dip, pick up a pasty @11’s on Fore Street and make sure you swing by the Avon Mill Garden Centre on the way out and pay a visit to Emma Vowles’ beautiful flower shop.

Further afield, Totnes is renowned for its independent shops and Friday morning market in the main square. I've picked up some real bargains here... lovely pieces of vintage china, gorgeous locally made soaps from Emma’s Soaps and beautiful handpainted furniture from Fifty One Interiors. Other favourites include homewares shops Vintage Living and Penelope Tom who stocks locally made oilcloth bags by Love Lammie, Country Cheeses and Revival, a fabulous vintage shop further up the high street.

Where can I eat locally sourced food?

For those staying at South Allington House, the Milbrook Inn at South Pool is an absolute must. Perched on the side of the estuary, this charming pub produces the best Sunday roast in the South Hams. Further afield, The Cricket Inn on the beach at Beesands serves up great locally sourced fish and chips, while the Pig's Nose in East Prawle offers the quintessential Devon pub experience with low ceilings and cosy fires.

However, one of my all time favourite places to eat in the South Hams is nestled on South Sands beach just outside Salcombe. The Winking Prawn (pictured) is the stuff of local legend - renowned for its fresh locally sourced seafood, fabulous location and all round holiday atmosphere. Another great spot is the award-winning Field Kitchen at Riverford Farm, the ultimate field to fork dining experience.

What should I see, do or visit while I’m there?

Lannacombe Beach is for me one of the most picturesque spots in all of Devon - a great place for beach games, sand castle building and picnics in the sun. Or for a lovely day trip, take the boat to the Salcombe side of the estuary and spend the day exploring the shops, relaxing on the beach and taking in the view of the estuary which is truly stunning.

Wine lovers should head to Sharpham Vineyard (pictured) for a day of tasting in this beautiful setting on the banks of the River Dart. Don’t miss the delicious cheeses too... a firm favourite in our household is the Elmhirst Brie – creamy deliciousness to die for! For action and adventure head to Bigbury-on-Sea - one of the only surf beaches in South Devon and a great spot for kite surfing. Or for a luxurious day out, take the sea tractor over to Burgh Island and enjoy lunch at the legendary Burgh Island Hotel.

When is the best time of year to go?

For me spring or late summer is the best time to visit. Come school holidays the area is packed full of people as well as the London masses who set up camp in their holiday houses for the season. It’s not that I mind the crowds, I just prefer having this lovely area as much to myself as possible!
