For our Great Escape feature this month, Suzannah Roach of online fashion accessories store I May, I Might, I Must shares her tips on the best places to shop, eat, stay and visit in Richmond-Upon-Thames.
Where is it?
Richmond-Upon-Thames is a leafy riverside suburb in Surrey, located about 15 miles to the southwest of central London, making it ideal for a day trip away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Why should I go there?
Richmond has everything you need, from beautiful surroundings and open spaces to great shopping and dining. Not only does the River Thames run through the town centre, but the tow path leads you to Kew Gardens (pictured) as well as the miles of open space and wildlife in nearby Richmond Park, both of which are within walking distance of the town centre. Once you’ve worn yourself out with the fresh air and stunning views, there is an abundance of shops, bars and restaurants to discover, giving it a wonderful villagey feel despite being close to London.
Will I find interesting local products to buy?
The Richmond Farmers Market takes place every Saturday in Heron Square next to Richmond Bridge, where you'll find a variety of fresh produce, cheeses, meats, bread and vegetables. Head off the beaten track, up Richmond Hill and down the narrow cobbled alleyways near Richmond Green and you'll also discover many independent boutiques and stores. On Hill Rise you'll find The Teddington Cheese offering a great selection of of artisan cheeses, in Paved Court you'll find top British chocolatier William Curley's handmade chocolates, and in nearby Kew the delightful Mia Wood store has a beautiful range of gifts including stationery and homewares.
Due to the fantastic amenities Richmond is popular with young families, and hidden away in houses and small offices are many thriving small businesses that are rapidly growing and becoming a core part of the economy. I Might, I May, I Must (pictured) is an example of this, a newly launched online shop selling disctinctive fashion accessories, which is fast becoming recognised as having the key brands of the season. The majority of the bags, jewellery, hats, scarves and belts are manufactured here in Great Britain, ensuring that high standards are continually met, while the innovative designs are offered in an easy to shop online environment.

Where can I eat locally sourced food?
There's a really quirky tea shop called The Tea Box on Paradise Road which has a great selection of teas, pastries and homemade cakes - afternoon tea is excellent and there's always the option of champagne instead of tea if you’re looking for a treat! Oliver's Wholefoods in Kew has a great selection of organic food and drink, while the fabulous seasonal food at Petersham Nurseries Restaurant (pictured) has understandably made it a bit of a celeb hangout. Take a walk along the towpath from Richmond and pop in for afternoon tea in beautiful surroundings - you never know who you might spot! For dinner head to Rock & Rose in Kew Road for a lavishly decorated setting with al fresco eating available on the front terrace - the 'surf and turf' is their signature dish which is excellent.

Can I stay somewhere with a bit of character?
If you want stunning views try the Petersham Hotel, set high up on Richmond Hill overlooking the water meadows and the River Thames. For boutique style, visit the Bingham Hotel (pictured) a small privately owned hotel set in a Georgian building on the riverfront offering luxury with a vintage twist - the bar does great cocktails and the restaurant has recently acquired a Michelin Star.

What should I see, do or visit while I’m there?
If you like the outdoors you have eight miles of open space with deer roaming wild in Richmond Park, while Kew Gardens offers spectacular groomed gardens all year round. Or take a leisurely walk or cycle ride along the riverside towpath from Kew to Richmond, far away from the London crowds. Sports fans can visit the famous Twickenham Rugby Stadium (pictured) just up the road - international games are held regularly and you'll find the atmosphere electric, whether or not you're a fan of rugby.

When is the best time of year to go?
In the summer, head down to Richmond riverside (pictured) where you can chill out in the bars and restaurants along the riverfront while you watch the boats and swans glide by. But for me, the best time is when the tourists depart and the leaves turn golden brown and begin to drop of the trees in Kew Gardens. Wrap up warm and take a leisurely stroll around - it's a view that can not be justified with words.
