Escape to... Pembrokeshire

This month's Great Escape is brought to you by Hilary Lowe of Pemrokeshire-based Damson & Slate, a unique shop that celebrates all things stylish and Welsh, from blankets and baskets to hand-dyed wool clothing and locally made ceramics.

Where is it?

Narberth is a small yet bustling Welsh market town in Pembrokeshire, located north of Tenby and south of the Preseli Hills.

Why should I go there?

Well known for its variety of independent shops, delis, cafes and boutiques, Narberth makes the prefect base from which to explore Pembrokeshire, a stunning county surrounded on three sides by coastline with miles of coastal paths, unspoilt beaches, historic castles and good food.

Will I find interesting local products to buy?

You'll find Damson & Slate at no. 33 High Street Narberth: a small unique boutique selling beautiful interior and fashion accessories all sourced and made in Wales. The collection, which is also available online, includes hats, scarves and jumpers hand knitted in local yarns with organic plant dyed trims, hand woven cushions, local willow baskets, simple rustic pottery and throws in fabulous muted natural colours woven on traditional looms.

Other local shops worth a visit include Susie’s Sheepskin Boots whose products are all made at her workshop in Spring Gardens, and Fredericks Chocolaterie where you can indulge in artisan chocolates made on the premises – simply delicious!

Where can I eat locally sourced food?

Narberth is full of great places to eat... for local produce try PlumVanilla Café where you'll find juices, salads, homemade cakes and daily specials in a relaxed atmosphere where kids are welcome. Visit Ultracomida which specialises in delicious Welsh cheeses, and the Bethesda Farm Shop which stocks my absolute favourite sausages, while the award-winning Haverfordwest Farmers Market tales place every other Friday. We're also lucky to have Pembrokeshire Produce Direct, another award-winning enterprise which delivers fresh local produce to your doorstep. For fabulous waterside views you should visit Quayside Lawrenny (pictured) and order the fresh local crab.

Can I stay somewhere with a bit of character?

The oldest house in Narberth is Plas Farmhouse, a lovely B&B with loads of character and simple rustic charm - it's just a two minute stroll into Narberth and has wonderful views over the rolling hills. Or try Pembrokeshire's boutique hotel The Grove (pictured), an 18th century country house with 12 luxury rooms and 4 cottages, along with a restaurant serving locally sourced modern food.

What should I see, do or visit while I’m there?

Here are a few of my favourites: Breathtaking walks at Freshwater West Beach, the beautiful lily ponds at Bosherston, tea at the unusual Ye Olde Worlde Tearooms run by…..well read about the owner here! Visit Dylan Thomas' boathouse at Laugharne, and for more culture head to St Davids with its stunning cathedral, art galleries and cafes. The Bro Meigan Gardens are also worth a visit, not just for the plants but also the breathtaking views.

When is the best time of year to go?

Pembrokeshire is wonderful all year round, but Spring bluebell walks, summer on the beaches, and indulging in good food in the Autumn are all good reasons to visit. Foodies should also plan a visit in June when Pembrokeshire Fish Week (pictured) takes place, or in September for the hugely successful Narberth Food Festival.
