Great Escapes

Escape to... Harrogate

For our latest Great Escape, we visit Harogate in North Yorkshire thanks to Claire Sutcliffe of British sofa manufacturer Sofas And Stuff. As store manager of their Yorkshire showroom, Claire is perfectly placed to share her tips on the best places to shop, eat, stay and visit in this elegant spa town.

Where is it?

Harrogate is a spa town in North Yorkshire, known for its elegant avenues, smart tearooms and historic Turkish Baths.

Why should I go there?

Harrogate is a beautiful spa town with lots of delightful shops to fulfil all your retail therapy needs. It is also the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors where you can find sensational views and rousing country walks. Nearby, we also have Ripley Castle and the ruins of Fountains Abbey (pictured), which is a world heritage site that will appeal to any history buffs out there.

Will I find interesting local products to buy?

Well, of course there is Sofas and Stuff which is in Bishop Thornton just outside Harrogate, where you'll find a large selection of British made sofas and sofabeds. Do pop in to say hello... we make excellent coffee and have lots of comfy places to perch!

For the very best locally sourced food and drink, we love Weetons and Fodder which are both in Harrogate. Or if you're looking for something nice to wear then take a look at Bo Ho Chic Boutique, or pay a visit to Newby Hall for beautiful plants and garden knick knacks.

Where can I eat locally sourced food?

A trip to Harrogate wouldn't be complete without a visit to the famous Betty’s Tea Rooms (pictured), world-famous for their delicious teas and cakes. If you're looking for something a little more substantial then The Crown Inn at Roecliffe is the spot for superb lunches and dinners. When you have the family in tow, nothing beats Lockwoods in Ripon which is a child-friendly choice.

Can I stay somewhere with a bit of character?

Hotel du Vin in Harrogate (pictured) is just beautiful, as you would expect from this chain of boutique hotels. Or try Crab Manor at Asenby near Thirsk, which is also home to the very lovely Crab and Lobster Restaurant

What should I see, do or visit while I’m there?

If beautiful gardens are your thing, then a visit to the RHS Gardens in Harrogate is a must. If you fancy taking in a bit of history and culture then make a beeline for Harewood House in Leeds. Or pay a visit to Castle Howard (pictured) which is famous for its starring role in the TV series Brideshead Revisited. You might also like to make a trip to the coastal town of Whitby for some world class fish and chips.

When is the best time of year to go?

Yorkshire is an all year round destination but it's especially beautiful in the summer. Check out www.yorkshire.com for what to do, what’s on, and where to stay, to top up on our own personal tips.
