About us...

Shades of Grey is an independantly run creative studio, founded by artist Nathalie Kowalski - who prides herself in specialising in the decorative use of entirely locally resourced Cornish Slate. From hearts shapes to house names their simple range is endless.

Nathalie has a myriad of artistic talents including floristry and architectural drawings and is already an established mosaic designer who includes Lord Bath amongst her clientele.

After spending many of her childhood years visiting Cornwall on family holidays she has always felt drawn to the area.

" We spent many happy summers in Cornwall from St Ives to Penzance, to me it was a home from home."

So a few years ago she finally uprooted herself from Manchester and moved to Cornwall. With in no time at all the fresh air and scenic coasts gave her much inspiration to start creating something new.

" I love it here, the way of life, the beautiful landscapes the people, the individuality of the place - everything about it is a haven for budding artists such as myself."

" although my background is in mosaics which are avid and colourful I felt compelled to do something simple and original", she says " we are all being told how important it is to watch our carbon footprints and use local products - whether it be with food or materials, so I thought what better than to use something from this beautiful part of the world. For me as an artist- to make gifts and create something out of local materials is most satisfying. "

Nathalie also offers a more bespoke service where customers are able to have personalized slates made to order which could include names or locations, a memorable phrase perhaps, which can then be included in the overall design.
