Every morning since midsummer’s day 2005, founder Gavan Goulder and his team of photographers have woken before daybreak to photograph the dawn of a new day over the dramatic Cornish coastline. The images are then printed, mounted and framed along with a personalised handwritten message, to celebrate a special day or memorable occasion, such as a wedding, anniversary or the birth of a child.

Sounds like hard work? Don’t take my word for it, watch their video and see how it’s done… every day, come rain, snow, or sunshine! To browse the photographs taken on your special day, take a look at www.thedaythat.co.uk.

They show the mosaic work of Smashing Chintz founder Janine Nelson who combines fragments of old discarded china with vintage plates to create stunning new pieces. Janine says that chintzy fabric and china have suffered from a poor image in recent years, but now she’s on a quest to bring chintz into the 21st century in a new, slightly quirky way. From the photos below, I’d say she’s definitely succeeded!

Find out more about Janine’s work and her mosaic workshops at www.smashingchintz.co.uk.

There’s nothing quite like getting all the family together for a bit of puzzle action, and I’m firmly of the opinion that jigsaws, like parlour games, should not just be for Christmas. I can clearly remember the delight of spreading a zillion piece jigsaw on the dining room table as a child and the great sense of satisfaction as that last piece finally dropped into place.

But if you thought jigsaws were just for kids, take a look at these fabulously stylish and very grown-up creations from Wentworth Wooden Puzzles. Based in the Cotswolds, their beautifully crafted wooden jigsaw puzzles include this funky (and probably quite tricky!) patchwork quilt design, and these innovative jigsaw placemats – perfect for a spot of after dinner puzzling. Wentworth are also one of the only companies still producing traditional British ’whimsy’ jigsaws, where specially shaped themed pieces are cut ‘on a whim’ by Victorian hand cutter (below right).

With Father’s Day coming up, why not challenge a jigsaw-loving dad or grandad to an afternoon of puzzling? There are plenty of sports themed jigsaws on the Wentworth website, and they’re offering our readers 10% off until the end of June. Simply quote promotional code FBWL10 when you order by phone, or online at www.jigsaws.co.uk.
