Dressing Up Delights

Wednesday 9 November 2011

One of my most enduring memories of childhood is the wonderful dressing-up box we had in our playroom… endless hours were spent with friends prancing around in my grandma’s old 1960s nylon nighties, transformed (if you really squinted) into bridal gowns and fairy princess attire.

So it was with great delight that I answered an invitation from Libby Boalch of The Dressing Up Chest to bring my two boys along to a fancy dress party where she would be photographing her latest children’s costume collection.

From her studio in Kew, Libby creates the most delightful handmade dressing-up costumes for children. From fairytale classics such as Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks, to Pirates, Princesses, Peter Pan and Dorothy (Toto not included!), her costumes are beautifully made using quality fabrics and with great attention to detail (I just love those applique bears on Goldilocks’ apron). Each outfit is really a work of art and is sure to be enjoyed by generations of children to come.

Libby can also make bespoke costumes to order – she very kindly rustled up a tiny baby pirate outfit when I told her I’d be bringing my 9 month old along (that’s Louis bottom centre, while big brother Sam is dressed as a Knight). So next time you need a costume for a school play or birthday party, why not browse the collections at www.dressingupchest.co.uk.

Reader Offer: Get 15% off The Tube

Saturday 1 October 2011

Dorset-based womenswear designer Harry Duley has launched ‘The Tube’, an innovative layering piece in soft luxurious jersey which bridges the gap between your top and your waistband.

Ideal for sports such as yoga and pilates, or simply to give the effect of layering without having to wear extra layers. Mums-to-be will also find that it allows them to wear their regular clothes for longer, and we think it would make a wonderfully stylish and practical gift for any new mum. As with all of Harry Duley’s designs, the Tube is not only made in Britain but the fabric is also woven and dyed here too.

The Tube is packaged in an environmentally friendly cardboard tube and normally costs £14.95. However, our readers can get a fantastic 15% off until the end of November – simply use promotional code ‘FBWL11′ at the checkout. To browse the collection visit www.harryduley.co.uk.

We Love Lammie & Kirstie

Wednesday 24 August 2011

There’s been a distinctly Devonshire feel to the news dropping into our inbox this week – in fact, this is the first of three blog posts highlighting news from the county. First up, a spot of celebrity spotting! At the recent Chagford Show Devon-based designer Victoria Lammie of Love Lammie was surprised and delighted when craft guru Kirstie Allsopp stopped by her stand and left with one of her ‘Martha’ oilcloth aprons, while filming her new TV series Kirstie’s Crafty Britain at the fair. Make like Kirstie and grab your own Martha apron while stocks last at www.lovelammie.co.uk.

Five Years Young

Thursday 28 July 2011

More birthday celebrations… this time for Cleveland-based Pins & Ribbons who celebrated five years in business this month with a vintage themed tea party and balloon release outside their shop. Having started as a home-based business around the kitchen table, the company now boasts a successful online store, a recently opened retail shop in old Eaglescliffe, and their own manufacturing unit, as well as supplying hundreds of stockists around the UK, including several well known department stores.

Founder Kerrie Murray explains her motivation: “Pins and Ribbons came about as a result of my love of sewing, coupled with the fact that I was fed up with seeing mass produced items that were made abroad in the UK’s high street shops. So when I set up my company I was determined that it would involve high quality home accessories, handmade from start to finish in the UK.”

The collection is constantly evolving and now includes made-to-measure curtains, blinds, headboards, cushions, footstools and pinboards in a choice of fabrics to suit your scheme, as well as personalised gifts and wedding items. Browse the range at www.pinsandribbons.co.uk.

Regular readers will remember that a little while ago I posted about Honda’s ’Made in Britain’ competition. To celebrate 20 years of manufacturing cars in their Swindon factory, the company recently launched a series of national competitions to find Britain’s best makers. The theme of the first competition was ‘Style’ and the prize on offer was a £1,000 crafts grant to further develop the winner’s business. The standard of entries was very high and after the tricky job of whittling down a shortlist, the winners have now been announced.

First prize went to woven textile designer Chantal Balmer whose innovative fabrics caught the judges’ attention. Chantal studied Woven textile Design at The Glasgow School of Art and spent a year in Bangalore, India learning about silk Jacquard weaving. Speaking about her craft Chantal said “My own textile passions lie in woven interior textiles and in the experimental manipulation of structures and geometric patterns. I combine traditional and contemporary weaving techniques using quality yarns to create innovative and unique three-dimensional fabrics. Weaving inspiration comes from all around me. Architecture, tessellations, and nature provide the stimulus I need when thinking about designing a new piece of fabric.”

The runner-up prize of  £300 went to Lisa Tilley of U Old Bag! who upcycles vintage luggage using reclaimed materials such as old magazines, illustrations and photographs. Her work has been featured at Milan and Paris Fashion Week and is currently stocked in Paul Smith stores around the world. Lisa is no stranger to awards, having won several prestigious competitions for her work in recent years.

Congratulations to all of the entrants and of course the two very deserving winners. For details of upcoming competitions, visit the Honda: Made in Britain facebook page.

Making it British

Saturday 25 June 2011

This guest blog post was written by Kate Hills of Make It British, a website dedicated to supporting British made clothing and accessories – visit www.makeitbritish.co.uk.

There are 80 billion new garments produced annually worldwide, most of which will end up in landfill. In fact, clothing makes up 1.5 million tons of the rubbish that we throw away in Britain every year. Such is our appetite for fast, throwaway fashion, that the majority of orders for clothing and accessories now go off-shore to enormous factories in the Far East, because the smaller, specialist units that were making our products in the UK just cannot compete on price or turnaround time.

The statistics tell the shocking truth; in 1981 the British clothing and footwear market imported 29% of the fashion that we consumed, by 2001 that figure had risen to 90%.

Many factories in the UK have had to close down in the last few years as a result of this decrease in demand, and as a consequence not only have skilled workers here in Britain been left without jobs, but there is no one left to train up a new generation of machinists and pattern cutters should we need them in the future.

Make It British blog

With a desire to put things right, Make it British, a website dedicated to supporting British made clothing and accessories, carried out a survey to discover if consumers are starting to turn their backs on this mass-produced clothing, and the results were quite encouraging.

More than two-thirds of respondents do now look at where their garment is produced before they buy it, although they say that this information is not always easy to find. Not surprising then that nearly everyone surveyed would like to see clearer labelling to show the country of origin of a garment.

And whilst design and price are still the most important factors for the majority when choosing clothing and accessories, where a garment is made was the principal factor for more than 30% of those that answered the survey.

So the British public does care, and they want it made easier for them to discover more about the provenance of their clothes. That is why websites like Make it British and From Britain with Love are doing the best that they can to provide a resource to those fantastic brands and individual makers who are keeping their production here in Britain. So together, let’s make it British!
